  • Founder & Executive Director

    Ava Sophia is a vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, educator, and community organizer. Originally from the Allston-Brighton neighborhood of Boston, Ava is dedicated to the growth of art spaces in the city of Boston and beyond as opportunities for community building and economic empowerment. 

    Ava is a graduate of the world-renowned Berklee College of Music and she is continuing to share her music locally in and around New England. In October 2019, Ava released her debut EP, “To See and Hear Hxrself”, a project dedicated to exploring the relationship between femininity and vulnerability, and empowering women/femmes of color to feel and express our emotions to the fullest extent. In 2023, Ava released her second project “You Are Where You Belong”. This project was funded by the City of Boston and included a stipend for three youth musicians to contribute as interns to the writing and production of the album. She has performed at stages all over Boston and curated numerous event spaces as well. 

    Ava considers education and community work to be at the center of her artistic practice. She has built and supported high quality music programming within arts non-profit spaces across Boston, solidifying her as a leader within the Creative Youth Development sector. She has served at organizations including Sociedad Latina, Boys and Girls Club of Boston, and Zumix. In her current role as Manager of Programs at Boston Raising Powerful Musicians, she continues to strive for students to foster their most authentic selves through music education. 


    Ava’s skills intersect at the heart of her mission to use music as a tool to elevate underrepresented voices and in doing so, create a more equitable world. 


  • Board Member, Treasurer

    Marcia is a portrait photographer based in Boston, Massachusetts. With a background in Business Management and entrepreneurship, she is currently expanding her knowledge in business analytics. As the owner of PhotosbyMarcia, she has built a substantial client base, specializing in event and portrait photography.


    Marcia’s long-term vision includes creating a physical space for creatives to collaborate, learn, and grow artistically while learning to run a successful business. Her project, Expressive Art Studios, aims to foster creativity and innovation within the art community.



  • Board Member, Fundraising Director

    Yuko Okabe is an illustrator and cultural worker playing at the intersection of "h-whimsy" and community engagement. She has used art and design in her many cross-disciplinary projects in affordable housing, healthcare, urban design, food justice, and community development. She also likes making characters, stories, curriculums, murals, and other colorful things.

  • Location: Boston, MA
    Reports to: Chairman of the Board 

    Position Summary:

    The Treasurer is a vital member of the Board of Directors, responsible for overseeing the financial management and sustainability of ArtSpark Boston. The Treasurer ensures that accurate financial records are maintained, monitors the organization’s financial health, and advises the Board on financial strategy. The role involves close collaboration with the Executive Director, Fundraising Director, and other board members to ensure that the organization can effectively support its artistic mission.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Financial Management and Oversight:

      • Maintain accurate and up-to-date financial records that comply with legal and organizational requirements.

      • Oversee the preparation and approval of the annual budget, working closely with the Executive Director and Finance Committee.

      • Monitor the organization’s financial performance, including tracking revenues, expenses, and cash flow, and report significant variances to the Board.

      • Ensure that financial policies, including those related to ticket sales, donations, grants, and other revenue sources, are followed.

    2. Financial Reporting:

      • Present regular financial reports to the Board, including income statements, balance sheets, and cash flow analyses, with a focus on transparency and clarity.

      • Ensure compliance with all federal, state, and local tax laws, including the timely filing of tax returns and reports.

      • Assist in the preparation of financial reports for grant applications, donor communications, and other external stakeholders.

    3. Audit and Compliance:

      • Coordinate the selection of an independent auditor and oversee the annual audit process, ensuring that the arts organization meets all auditing standards and requirements.

      • Review the audited financial statements and recommend them for Board approval.

      • Ensure the implementation of effective internal controls to safeguard the organization’s financial assets, including cash, investments, and art collections.

    4. Investment and Fund Management:

      • Oversee the management of the organization’s investment portfolio, ensuring alignment with the organization’s financial objectives and risk tolerance.

      • Work with the Finance Committee or external advisors to monitor investment performance and recommend adjustments as needed.

      • Ensure that any endowments or restricted funds are managed in accordance with donor intentions and legal requirements.

    5. Budgeting and Financial Planning:

      • Lead the Board’s involvement in the budgeting process, ensuring alignment with the organization’s artistic goals and long-term strategic plan.

      • Provide financial projections and analyses to support strategic decision-making, including program expansions, new initiatives, or capital projects.

      • Advise on the financial implications of major artistic and operational decisions, such as new productions, exhibitions, or educational programs.

    6. Fundraising and Resource Development:

      • Support the organization’s fundraising efforts by providing financial insights and analysis to the development team and Board.

      • Participate in donor meetings or events as needed to communicate the organization’s financial needs and impact.

      • Assist in developing strategies for increasing revenue from ticket sales, memberships, sponsorships, grants, and other sources.

    7. Board and Committee Involvement:

      • Serve as the chair of the Finance Committee, if applicable, and collaborate with other board members to fulfill the Board’s fiduciary responsibilities.

      • Educate and inform Board members about the organization’s finances, fostering a shared understanding of financial issues and opportunities.

      • Participate in Board meetings, committee meetings, and other organizational activities as required.

    8. Other Duties:

      • Perform other tasks related to financial management as assigned by the Board of Directors.

      • Stay informed about best practices in nonprofit financial management, particularly in the arts sector, and apply relevant knowledge to the organization’s operations.

    Qualifications:

    • Extensive experience in accounting, finance, or a related field, with a strong understanding of nonprofit financial management.

    • Knowledge and passion for the arts, with an appreciation of the financial challenges and opportunities unique to arts organizations.

    • CPA designation or equivalent experience is preferred.

    • Familiarity with financial software and systems used by nonprofit organizations, especially those relevant to arts and culture.

    • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to present complex financial information in a clear and engaging manner.

    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple priorities.

    • Commitment to the mission and values of ArtSpark Boston.

    Preferred Experience 

    • Experience in nonprofit board service 

    • Experience working directly with Greater Boston-based BIPOC communities 

    • A background working in the arts or arts administration

    Position Summary:

    The Fundraising Director is a critical member of the Board of Directors, responsible for leading and overseeing the organization’s fundraising efforts. This role involves developing and implementing fundraising strategies, engaging with donors, and ensuring that the organization has the resources necessary to achieve its mission. The Fundraising Director works closely with the Executive Director, development staff, and other board members to foster a culture of philanthropy and maximize fundraising potential.

    Key Responsibilities:

    1. Fundraising Strategy and Planning:

      • Develop and oversee the implementation of a comprehensive fundraising plan that aligns with the organization’s strategic goals.

      • Identify and evaluate opportunities for new revenue streams, including individual giving, major gifts, corporate sponsorships, grants, and special events.

      • Set fundraising goals and metrics in collaboration with the Board and Executive Director, and monitor progress towards these goals.

    2. Donor Cultivation and Stewardship:

      • Build and maintain relationships with current and prospective donors, ensuring that they are engaged and informed about the organization’s work and impact.

      • Develop and implement donor stewardship plans to recognize and thank donors, ensuring their continued support.

      • Participate in donor meetings, presentations, and events to personally cultivate and solicit major gifts.

    3. Campaign Leadership:

      • Lead and manage capital campaigns, annual fund drives, and other major fundraising initiatives, coordinating with staff and volunteers as needed.

      • Ensure that campaigns are well-organized, effectively promoted, and achieve their financial targets.

      • Oversee the development of campaign materials, including case statements, brochures, and digital content.

    4. Grant Management:

      • Identify potential grant opportunities and work with staff to prepare compelling grant proposals.

      • Develop relationships with foundation representatives and oversee the submission of timely grant applications and reports.

      • Monitor grant compliance and ensure that funded projects are executed as promised.

    5. Special Events:

      • Plan and execute fundraising events, including galas, benefit concerts, auctions, and other special events, in collaboration with staff and volunteers.

      • Ensure that events are successful in raising funds, increasing visibility, and engaging donors and the community.

      • Evaluate the effectiveness of events and recommend improvements for future efforts.

    6. Communications and Marketing:

      • Work with the communications team to develop and implement strategies for promoting fundraising activities and campaigns through various channels, including social media, email, and print materials.

      • Ensure consistent messaging that aligns with the organization’s brand and mission.

      • Oversee the creation of fundraising appeals, donor newsletters, and other communications.

    7. Financial Oversight:

      • Collaborate with the Treasurer and to ensure that fundraising activities are cost-effective and align with the organization’s budget.

      • Monitor fundraising expenses and revenues, providing regular updates to the Board on financial outcomes.

      • Participate in the development of the organization’s overall budget, ensuring that fundraising projections are realistic and achievable.

    8. Data Management:

      • Ensure that accurate donor records are maintained in the organization’s database, and that donor information is used effectively for fundraising purposes.

      • Analyze fundraising data to identify trends and opportunities for improvement.

    9. Other Duties:

      • Stay informed about best practices and trends in nonprofit fundraising and apply this knowledge to the organization’s fundraising efforts.

      • Perform other duties as assigned by the Board of Directors.

    Qualifications:

    • Proven experience in fundraising, development, or a related field, with a strong track record of success in securing funds from diverse sources.

    • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills, with the ability to engage and inspire donors, board members, and volunteers.

    • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.

    • Knowledge of fundraising software and donor management systems.

    • A passion for the mission of ArtSpark Boston and a commitment to advancing its goals.

    Position Summary

    ArtSpark Boston is seeking passionate and community-minded individuals to join our Advisory Board. Advisory Board Members provide insight, expertise, and strategic support to help further our mission. This is a non-governing, non-fiduciary volunteer role designed to offer thought partnership, expand our network, and champion our work in the broader community.

    Key Responsibilities

    • Serve as a thought partner to ArtSpark leadership on programs, partnerships, and organizational growth.

    • Attend quarterly advisory meetings (virtual or hybrid).

    • Provide strategic guidance in your area(s) of expertise (e.g., fundraising, event planning, youth development, DEI, marketing, arts administration).

    • Help expand ArtSpark’s visibility by making introductions, sharing resources, and amplifying events or campaigns within your network.

    • Offer occasional ad hoc support via phone calls, email, or project-based consulting (estimated 1–2 hours/month outside meetings).

    • Advocate for ArtSpark’s mission and values in your personal and professional circles.

    Ideal Candidates
